Pt. Biswajit Sarkar is a prominent Sitar recital exponent of the Seniya Maihar Gharana. After his initial training, during his university days in Viswa Bharati at Shantiniketan, the Great Sitar Maestro Late Pandit Indranil Bhattacharya (a disciple of Sur Sadhak USTAD BABA ALAUDDIN KHAN SAHIB) who was the then dean of the music department at the university accepted him as his disciple. Biswajit was also adjudged the best Sitar performer in All India University level in 1986 and 1988.
After years of practice, with the beginning of a close relationship with his guru and greatly influenced by the Gharana maestros, Biswajit has assimilated the distinctive features of the Seniya Maihar Gharana. He was also trained by Padmabhushan Debabrata Chowdhury (Pt Debu Choudhury) between 1996 to 1998. He Also received training from Great Sarod Maestro Pt. Rajeev Taranath, Sangeet Natak akademi award winner and Padmashree a sinior disciple of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan Sahab.
All this has helped Biswajit to emerge as a brilliant Sitar player after he completed his graduation and a post graduation in music from VISWA BHARATI UNIVERSITY, Shantiniketan with distinction. Biswajit has also obtained a second Master`s Degree having qualified himself from the PRAYAG SANGIT SAMITI, Allahabad securing a first division in his field.
Biswajit`s aristocratic performance is specially covered by the perfect delineation of raga, sense of Sur, Tal and Laya. It is this versatility in his performance, which distinguishes Biswajit from his contemporary Sitar players.
